The format rules and gameplay for the quiz show The Weakest Link was created in 2000 by Fintan Coyle and Cathy Dunning, and it was first developed for the BBC Entertainment Department. Since then, the bible containing the format for The Weakest Link has been translated in its entirety into more than 30 different languages so it can be shown on television screens across the world.
Pre-game (Green room segment and preparation)[]
Green room/prologue segment[]
Before the game begins, a group of contestants that consists of 5 to 9 strangers; are gathered into a furnished green room equipped with chairs or couches. While the contestants chat and socialize, filming begins with a brief shot of each contestant. During post-production, the green room segment was first shown in black and white and in slow motion for approximately 15 seconds before the opening title animation. As the green room segment plays, the audio of the narrator is overlaid with the soundtrack, as the narrator explains a brief preview of the game and how it will be played.
In later formats of the series, starting in the mid-2000s, the green room segment was shown in full color. The green room segment was completely cut in formats worldwide since March 2020, with the last series featuring a green room being the second series of De zwakste schakel. In other 2020s formats, including the American, Australian, British, and Greek revivals of the Weakest Link, the green room segment was replaced with a short prologue by the presenter with the contestants already in the studio.
Preparation[]
When the contestants first enter the studio, they go to their assigned podium and get prepped (ex: have their microphones checked, learn how to vote, etc.) When all of the contestants and producers are ready to start the game, the presenter is asked to walk onto the set. In most formats during the 2000s, the presenter is not allowed to interact with the contestants before or between filming.
During preparations with a studio audience, warm-ups are used to boost audience satisfaction and reduce boredom. The warm-ups may include stand-up comedy, music, etc.
Introduction[]
To start the game, the presenter chants the opening phrase "Welcome to the Weakest Link" to the camera. Then the studio lights brighten up while the studio camera pans out to show the whole stage. The presenter then briefly repeats the overview of the game before introducing the team of contestants.
During the "meet the team" segment, the contestants must state their name, age, location, and occupation to the camera in one take. In recent formats, the contestants no longer state their age, and in formats like the Australian revival, the contestants can state one fact about themselves. In a special kids' episode of the original American version, instead of occupation, they state the school they attend.
